Canton PD Issues Warning About School Buses
This week is National School Bus Safety Week and the Canton PD is urging motorists to be mindful around school buses.

CANTON, CT — National School Bus Safety Week is this week and the Canton Police Department is urging folks to always be mindful of the law when dealing with buses on the roadways.
The CPD is "strongly urging" drivers to slow down and be aware of school buses in the community.

"Although school buses are one of the safest modes of transportation, injuries and fatalities do occur outside of or near the buses," wrote local police Tuesday.
"Most often, these tragedies occur because a motorist has failed to slow down and obey the bus’s stop sign, or to follow local traffic laws."

Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and requires the operator of any vehicle or motor vehicle to stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of a school bus when the bus is displaying flashing red lights.
The only exception is when directed otherwise by a traffic officer.
The fine for the first violation is $475.
