Canton Public Schools Workers Being Honored by Red Cross for Saving Life

Two workers are being honored for helping to save the life of a student who collapsed in school.

Canton Public Schools employees will be honored at the Red Cross Heroes Breakfast for their quick-thinking actions that helped save the life of a student who collapsed in the high school cafeteria.

Technology Specialist Andy Buckle and RN School Nurse Supervisor Diane Sodaro will be honored at the March 20 event.

The breakfast honoring them will be held at the Hartford Marriott Downtown Hotel at 200 Columbus Blvd. Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m. and tickets are $40. Wells fargo is the statewide leadership sponsor.

“We are looking forward to once again honoring heroes at this year’s breakfast in Hartford,” said American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region CEO Mario Bruno. “This year’s honorees are inspiring for their willingness to help and for their impact on the lives of others. They represent the Red Cross ideals of compassionate service and of building safer, more resilient communities.”

Community Resilience Award: The City of East Hartford, for its multiple programs to better

support residents and strengthen its infrastructure in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

Workplace Hero Award: United Technologies Corporation, for its support of American Red Cross disaster relief programs, Red Cross fire safety programs, Red Cross blood drives and volunteer support of the Red Cross in Connecticut.

Military Hero Award: SFC Alex Seretny, of Windham, who is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the nation’s fourth-highest combat award; the Purple Heart; the Combat

Infantryman’s Badge; and the Combat Action Badge. He has been recommended for a second Bronze Star for actions taken in Afghanistan in 2013.

Spirit of the Red Cross Award: Ray Adams, of Hartford, for his quick thinking and actions in saving the life of his 11 year-old son who suffered cardiac arrest while playing in a pre-season football scrimmage. Adams had only that morning been certified in Red Cross CPR.
