Canton Vows To Enforce State Open Burn Bans

Extremely dry weather in recent weeks has the forest fire danger at 'extreme,' according to state environmental officials.

CANTON, CT — Local police and firefighters are urging folks in Canto to refrain from any open burning out of fear the dry weather could spawn another forest fire.

Effective Sunday, Canton police and fire said there is a temporary ban on all outdoor burning in Canton.

"This includes but is not limited to, campfires, fire pits, charcoal grilling, brush burning and fireworks," wrote Canton officials Sunday.

The State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has also banned several activities that involve burning at state parks and other lands they oversee.

According to DEEP, the fire level remains "extreme," evidenced by the massive Lamentation Mountain fire in nearby Berlin, which still burns after a week.
