Canton's Bravest Honored At FD Awards Dinner

CANTON, CT — Canton's bravest celebrated the work they do last weekend at the Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department's annual awards and appreciation dinner.

The event occurred Saturday night, April 20, and several members were honored for their service.

Among the recipients was Willi Matava, who has served the Town of Canton for 50 years.

"In that time, he has seen numerous changes in the town, equipment, apparatus, tactics, the change from three separate private fire organizations to one municipal department, growth of the department mission and dozens more," wrote the fire department.

In addition to Matava, CFD Assistant Chief John Bunnell and CFD Assistant Chief Joe Ouimette were honored for their 20 years of service.

Meanwhile, Capt. Matt Bilts received recognition for 10 years and Bud Roach, Paul Boutote, and Chris Livesey received recognition for five years of service.

Other honors went to:

• Putt Brown, who received the Department Service Award for his contributions as a firefighter and service.

• Tom Gotaski, who was honored for turning out to the most fire calls.

• John Malentacchi, for most fire police calls.

• Greg Hayes for the most EMS duty hours.

• Manny Pantano, who received the Chiefs Appreciation Award for his overall commitment and service as an officer to the department.

The event was held at the Farmington Polo Club and fire coverage was provided by the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department.

"We thank them for their support and commitment as one of our mutual aid partners," wrote the CFD. "We would also like to thank all the local businesses who generously donated raffle gifts that added to the festivities."
