Dog, Bear, Tangle in Northern Connecticut Town
A dog had to have surgery after a bear encounter in a northern Connecticut town.

NEW HARTFORD, CT — The latest bear encounter in northern Connecticut involved a small dog on a walk along Route 202 in New Hartford on Monday night.
The dog's owners told NBC 30 that the canines sensed something and one named Roxy wound up tangling with a mother bear and cubs.
The dog named "Roxy wound up in emergency surgery, according to the NBC report.

Bears are not uncommon in town. According to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, 115 black bear sightings were reported in New Hartford over the past 12 months.
State residents can report a bear sighting by going to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Web site.

DEEP officials said there about 700 black bears that live in Connecticut.
