WATCH: Firefighters Battle Smoky Blaze In Canton

CANTON, CT — A dog at a local residence owes its life to fast-acting Canton firefighters Monday after being pulled from a smoky blaze at a home on Cherry Brook Road.

According to the Town of Canton Fire & EMS department, units were initially dispatched to investigate smoke from a home at about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Initial responders, however, noticed fire was in the basement of the private dwelling, and "heavy fire" was visible from the rear walk-out portion of the basement, according to Canton Fire & EMS.

"Crews performed an aggressive interior attack and search operation," wrote Canton Fire & EMS.

Authorities said one dog inside was saved by fire crews on the scene.

Canton firefighters thanked several mutual aid responders as well as local police who helped Canton with this fire and other calls Monday evening.

They include the Town of Canton CT Police Department; the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Co.; Burlington Volunteer Fire Department; Avon Volunteer Fire Department; New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department; and Barkhamsted East Vol. Fire Company #1.

The fire is under investigation by the Canton Fire Marshal's Office.
