“Come Ride the Polar Express: A PJ Story Time” At Canton Public Library

Fans of Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express are invited to a pajama story time at Canton Public Library on Thursday, December 29.   “Come Ride the Polar Express:  A PJ Story Time with Miss Heather” will begin at 6:30 PM.  The snow will swirl, so youngsters may want to come in robes and slippers for a special ride aboard the magical train, featuring stories by Chris Van Allsburg, railroad songs, and, of course, hot chocolate.  As a special added treat there will be live music, compliments of Michael Coderre.  The story time concludes the Holiday Vacation Week Events at the Canton Public Library.

Chris Van Allsburg’s enduring story was awarded the 1986 Caldecott Medal for its narrative and illustrations.  It opens on Christmas Eve, when a young boy lies awake listening for the sound of Santa’s sleigh bells.  Miraculously, he is taken on a ride aboard an old-fashioned steam train to the North Pole, where he takes part in Santa’s send-off for his annual world tour.  The young boy asks Santa for a silver bell from a reindeer’s harness but then loses it on his trip home.  The bell turns up, however, under his tree Christmas morning.

The Polar Express tells the story through the eyes of the young boy, whose wonderment underscores the magic of the story.  The full-page illustrations add to the mystery through an emphasis on shadows and light.

This special event is free and for youngsters ages 3-10.  REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. This event is extremely popular and fills up quickly, so register early.  Note: This story time does not include the movie.   Canton Public Library is at 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton.  For information:  (860) 693-5800 or www.cantonpubliclibrary.org
