This summer we’ll be wrapping the Canton Public Library up in all types of colors, “yarning it up” from top to bottom! We’re bringing the global street art phenomenon of “cozying” public fixtures with colorful knitted and crocheted art to Canton, and we’ll be spending the summer “yarn bombing” the library!

The art form known as “yarn bombing,” “yarn storming,” or “guerilla crochet art” features colorful crocheted or knitted wraps or “cozies” to adorn objects. Participants will learn about “yarn bombing” at an initial program on Wednesday, June 20, at 6:30 PM at the library. At this program, Sarah McCusker and Heather Baker will show a slideshow of yarn bombing across the country and the globe. They’ll discuss what yarn bombing is and how to participate, including many helpful hints about how the whole thing works.
“We'll brainstorm things in the library that we can yarn bomb and "adopt" things to create cozies for. We'll also share ways that people who are not knitters/crocheters can participate too,” said McCusker. “Participants can also bring materials to share if they wish. If you have a lot of brightly colored acrylic yarn, bring it in and we can share and swap colors so that we can make our yarnbombs as colorful as possible.”
Over the course of the summer, participants can come in and "install" their creations. Organizers hope to have all the “cozies” up on display by early August.
Later in the summer, there will be a celebration of the yarn bombing in a display case, a yarnbombing-themed story hour on August 7, and a reception for participants. Organizers are hoping to have at least one tween/teen craft session so that older students can help with the project.
McCusker and Baker are hoping for lots of participants, both experienced and novice, both knitters and crocheters. The whole experience will be fun for all as we “cozy up” the library so that it will be seen in a whole new way! Registration is requested.
