Learn How America's Music Developed At Canton Library Event

CANTON, CT — The history behind America's distinctive musical traditions will take center stage Saturday at the Canton Public Library.

Musician Joe Flood will present "When American Music Became American" at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the library, 40 Dyer Ave.

The free program will take audiences on a musical journey through the 19th century, exploring the development and blending of American folk songs and dances and the emergence of professional popular songwriting.

The presentation will also address the history of blackface minstrelsy and its place within the development of American music.

Flood will perform on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar as he demonstrates what distinguished developing American musical traditions from those that preceded them and connects that evolution with the nation's broader history.

The event is free and open to the public.

The library is asking attendees to register in advance through its website or by calling the library to help organizers provide enough seating.
