Making New Year's Resolutions That Stick!

Here we are - the time of year when people start contemplating their New Year's Resolution.

According to Forbes.com, only about 8% of people keep their New Year’s Resolutions. That means 92% of the resolution making population doesn't achieve what they set out to do! But it doesn't have to be that way.

Here are some tips to help you on your way to a successful 2014

  • Write it down: Choose no more than three goals, and make them specific and measurable. Then write them down. As an example, I will loose 10 pounds by March 1st. Post these goals somewhere you will see them. For instance:on your mirror, fridge, or front door.... anywhere you will see them daily.
  • Plan Ahead: Identify the steps you’ll need to meet the goal. So, if it is to work out three times a week, schedule it right into your calendar at set and consistent times. Pack your bag the night before and put it in your car. Whatever it is you'll need to meet your goal, have those things in place and ready to go.
  • Identify sabotage: What might hold you up in reaching your goals? There are many dynamics in our lives that impact daily activity. Factors such as personal relationships, job satisfaction or burn out, family dynamics, enough “you” time, etc. can all help or hinder you. Identify those things and plan to work around them as needed.
  • Visualize: What will your life look like when you meet these resolutions? What is it worth it to you to get there? What will be the cost of staying where you are? Visualize your future the way you want it to be and work to that end.
  • Share: Research shows we do better at reaching goals when we have community support. Tell friends and family about your goal and ask someone to check in with you regularly. Start your own Facebook group of likeminded folks. Use a smartphone app to track progress and connect with other people on a healthy path (SparkPeople, MyFitnessPal, LoseIt, etc.). Create the support network you need.
  • Get Support: Health coaches offer a unique support system that will enable your success.  From helping you set attainable goals, to working to identify potential road blocks and how to get around them, we take you step by step to success and long-term change.
