CANTON, CT — A special town meeting in Canton on Thursday night may not seem exciting, but its outcome could go a long way in dulling the pain of a post-revaluation tax bill this summer.

Historically, revaluations can be painful for taxpayers and Canton has just completed one.

With a revaluation, however, can come much higher property values, which are good when you're selling a property, but bad when it comes to short-term tax bills, which can skyrocket.

Thursday, Canton voters at a town meeting will decide whether or not to impose a four-year phase-in of the revaluation, authorizing the town's finance board to calculate a mill rate based on such a phase-in.

Essentially, what will be decided Thursday night is to pay the post-reval tax hike at once or over four years.

The town meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Canton Public Library & Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave., Canton.

The phase-in proposal is the only question on the agenda.
