Thrilling Finish to Class S Girls Basketball Final
Canton High School was seeking its first-ever state championship against top-seeded Thomaston.
UNCASVILLE, CT - Canton took advantage of Thomaston foul trouble to capture its first girls basketball state championship, winning the Class S title 64-51 Saturday morning at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Three Thomaston starters fouled out in the fourth quarter, enabling the Warriors to open up a 13-point advantage with 6:44 to play.
Thomaston held tough, cutting the deficit to five with 2:49 left, but Canton iced the championship from the foul line down the stretch.
After the teams tied at 8-8 through the first quarter, Canton took a slight advantage in the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 22-19 lead.
After intermission, Canton opened up an 11-point lead which Thomaston cut to six, but five points by Maggie Treacy late in the third quarter put the Warriors in front by nine entering the final eight minutes.
After being down as many as 13, Thomaston refused to quit, but the Warriors salted the game away, sinking 23 foul shots in the second half.
Treacy took game scoring honors with 25 points, including 12-of-15 from the free throw line. Emily Briggs also made a dozen free throws en route to tallying 18 points, while Abigail Skinner contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Julia Quinn led Thomaston with 17 points.
The Warriors avenged last year's 52-50 defeat to Thomaston in the finals.
