Town Offers Cooling Center

Library/Community Center Open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

The Town of Canton will have a cooling center available for residents at the Library/Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave., during the expected extreme heat on Wednesday June 20 and Thursday June 21. The facility will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

While there will be no special activities, the library is open during those hours, said Adam Libros, the town's fire marshal and director of emergency management.

Libros urges those without air conditioning to take advantage of the library or other places with air conditioning, such as malls or movie theaters.

The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 94 degrees on Wednesday and 95 on Thursday.

With humidity and other factors, however, it's predicted to feel more like 100 degrees, Libros said, much of the reason the service has now issue a heat advisory.

Residents are reminded to take extra precautions during the next two days of extreme heat:

  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Stay out of the sun whenever possible. If outdoor activities are required, try to accomplish them in the morning when temperatures are cooler.
  • Check on pets, neighbors, the young and elderly.
  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Do not delay in seeking medical assistance.
