As Residents Look to Beat the Heat, Towns Offer Places to Keep Cool

As the hot weather continues Thursday, most area towns are offering residents a place to keep cool. 

For today, the National Weather Service is predicting a high of 97 with a heat index of 105. 

Officials urge residents to stay in cool buildings as much as possible and are offering facilities for those who don't have air conditioning. 

In Canton the library at 40 Dyer Ave. will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

The Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, Avon, will be open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Avon is also offering a cooling center at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

Officials recommend the following during the extreme heat:

• Drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Stay out of the sun whenever possible. If outdoor activities are required, try to accomplish them in the morning when temperatures are cooler.
• Check on pets, neighbors, the young and elderly.
• Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Do not delay in seeking medical assistance.
