U.S. Rep Elizabeth Esty Wins 5th District Race

Esty declared victory around 10:30 p.m. and opponent Mark Greenberg conceded.

U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-5) will be heading back to Washington for a second term after defeating Republican challenger Mark Greenberg in the 5th District race.

The race was expected to be the closest of the congressional races in Connecticut, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

Esty had 53 percent of the vote with about 34,000 votes compared to Greenberg’s 46 percent with about 29,500 votes as of 10:45 p.m., according to WTNH.

The district covers part of Litchfield County along with bigger cities New Britain, Danbury and Waterbury and parts of Fairfield, Hartford and New Haven counties.

Esty thanked her husband, three children and volunteers.

She thanked volunteers who combined knocked on tens of thousands of doors and made hundreds of thousands of phone calls for the Esty campaign.

She wished Republican challenger Mark Greenberg well in her victory speech.

“I wished him well and congratulated him, it was a hard fought race,” she said.

Greenberg said he would not be running for the 5th District again.
