Police said the vehicle, a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro, left the road, struck a tree, and caught fire.

The two occupants were pulled from the vehicle and taken to St. Mary's Hospital, where they were both later pronounced dead, according to police.

The driver was identified as James Zabel, 43, of Meriden, and the passenger was identified as 42-year-old John D'Aniello of Waterbury, according to police.

D'Aniello served with the Plymouth Police Department for more than 18 years and retired as a captain.

"Throughout his years of dedicated service, he held numerous roles and responsibilities before being promoted to Captain in April 2024," the Plymouth Police Department wrote in a post on Facebook. "Captain D'Aniello's leadership, dedication, and countless contributions to our department and the Plymouth community will not be forgotten. His loss is deeply felt by those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

"Rest in peace, Captain D'Aniello. Thank you for your service."
