John “Jay” Gardner Bishop, 60

John “Jay” Gardner Bishop, 60, passed away Wednesday April 20, 2011 at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Jay was born April 14, 1951 in Waterbury, CT, the son of John M. Bishop and the late Barbara (Birch) Bishop. He was a longtime Cheshire resident.

Jay graduated from Cheshire High School, received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Vermont, attended Ohio State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated from the Yale School of Medicine in the Physician Assistant program in 1981.

He was currently employed as a Physician’s Assistant in the Employee Health Department for Yale New Haven Hospital, where he worked for the past 30 years.

Jay’s love of animals and photography were well known to his friends and family. He visited and photographed most of America’s State and National Parks for over 30 years.

Besides his father, Jay is survived by his brother Mark Bishop and his wife Lisa of Cheshire; his sister Sheri Wheale and her husband Kirk of New Jersey and Florida; his half brothers Michael Bishop and his wife Jackie of Cheshire, Jared Bishop of Clinton, and Jesse Bishop of Florida as well as his nieces and nephews Kyle, Blake, Dylan, Joshua, Jeremy, Stephen, Brian and Sean. Jay is predeceased by his brother Robert.

A graveside service will be private and held at the convenience of the family at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cheshire. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday April 27, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S.
