Area Students Awarded Scholarships

A student at St. Bridget School was among those receiving scholarships from the Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund.

WATERBURY—The Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund Inc. has awarded scholarships to eight area elementary-school students for the 2016-17 academic year. The awards were based on several criteria, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community service.

A scholarship was awarded to Sienna Morin of Cheshire, a student at St. Bridget School (pictured with board member Joanne Corbett and St. Bridget principal Jennifer Furlong). Also receiving scholarships were students from other Waterbury-area schools: Matthew Keating (Blessed Sacrament), Alexander Corona (Our Lady of Mount Carmel), Shawn Gagnon (St. Mary), Asia Chapman (Ss. Peter and Paul), Marcus Concepcion (St. Mary Magdalen), Delia Murphy (St. John’s), and Ashley Galvao (St. Francis-St. Hedwig).

The fund was established to honor the memory of late Waterbury Deputy Police Chief Christopher D. Corbett and to carry on his support of Waterbury-area Catholic schools and their students. Its signature fundraising event is a 5K run held each April at Holy Cross High School. Proceeds from the inaugural race enabled the fund to award its first scholarships. In addition to the elementary-school awards, scholarships were also granted to area high-school students.

“It was especially gratifying to meet the scholarship recipients and formally congratulate them,” said board member Lt. Joseph Rainone. For me personally it was at that moment that everything—all the planning, donations, meetings, and our purpose in starting the fund--just came together.“

The 2017 run is scheduled for April 2. Those interested in learning more about the scholarships or supporting the 5K can visit http://www.chriscorbett5k.com or follow on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Chris-Corbett-5K-755047707973423 .
