Bring Tissues for Viewing Film 50/50
Is the film "50/50" just a sentimental and uplifting dramedy? Or can it beat the odds?

The film 50/50, written by Will Reiser based on his own life, is a comedy/drama about Adam Lerner(Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who is diagnosed with cancer, and how he and his peers deal with it. Just because you know he survives, because he wrote the script, does not ruin the movie at all.
First of all, 50/50 is very funny. It could have been offensive, because it’s dealing with a controversial subject, but none of the jokes even seemed borderline offensive. One of the things that makes this movie hilarious, is Seth Rogen. He’s in regular form, but I don’t think I can get tired of him. Although, some may be turned off by his humour because its usually dirty and profanity ridden. I would quote something funny, but I am not sure if it would be allowed to be posted. Seth Rogen is always able to make it seem like he’s always been best friends with whoever he is in a movie with. There’s enough chemistry between Levitt and Rogen, that in a lot of scenes, for example, the head shaving scene, that it seems like it was filmed with hidden cameras, and that the two were actually just hanging out.
Along with the comedy, 50/50 balances the drama perfectly. The drama increases as Adam goes through different stages in the way he is dealing with his cancer, which is shown by his interactions with his therapist (Anna Kendrick), who is awesome. The movie never gets too sappy, thanks to the jokes. This movie seriously will make you laugh and cry at the same time. You will have more emotions that you know what to do with.
As usual, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is terrific. Levitt makes you feel everything Adam goes through. Every up and down he faces, you are right there with him. Some scenes are particularly great, such as when he has a breakdown, and when he is dealing with his therapist.
For a good 80% of the movie I was smiling. It is not necessarily uplifting, and it doesn’t try to be inspirational, it just makes you feel good, and is what makes 50/50 great. When you go to see this, make sure you bring tissues. One person behind me sounded like they could not even breath they were sobbing so much. I feel like I used the word "great" a lot in this review, but it is fitting. As with all the other movies I have reviewed in September, I would highly recommend this. Go see it now.
