Making Room For Parenting Imperfections

My passion in life is connecting with others. When I decided to sell my business and leave my career, my identity changed. I became Mom. Where I once was an integral part of running a company complete with financial and verbal recognition, I went to conversing with infants and toddlers who didn’t speak beyond a monosyllable. Each day I would go to the park in search of other bright successful women who had left their past lives for motherhood hoping and praying to make new friends. It could be lonely and I needed to know that I was not alone. The days of thought provoking discussions by day and sharing jokes at Thursday and Friday night happy hour were a thing of the past. I knew there had to be a way to reach other parents, so I began translating my insights and humor into writing.

 Armed with an artillery of comical stories about my every day life, I contacted magazines and newspapers to find a megaphone for my voice. Two years of submissions later, on my 38th birthday, I landed a job as a columnist for the New Haven Register, in New Haven Connecticut. That was eight years and over 400 columns ago. 

 My then four children and crazy house created plenty of fodder for my weekly column. I wrote about wanting to dismember my oldest when she taught my two year old how to jump out of the crib. I wrote about the different languages that men and women speak when it comes to organizing, prioritizing, and getting ready for holidays. I wrote about parting with your children’s baby clothes and preparing your home when your oldest leaves for school.

My motto was that if I could reach just one reader, make one person laugh, or touch their heart, I made it. I am excited to be writing for my home community. I hope you enjoy reading the columns as much as I did writing them.
