Cheshire Holds on to Beat Stamford, Advances to State Final

Cheshire will play for the American Legion state championship beginning Saturday.

The Cheshire American Legion baseball team got off to a fast start and held on to beat Stamford 7-5 in the Southern Division Super Regional final Tuesday at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford.

With the win, Cheshire will play for the state championship against the winner of the Northern Super Regional, RCP or Tolland, in a best of three series at Cubeta starting Saturday. Earlier Tuesday, defending state and Northeast Regional champion Branford was eliminated by Stamford in a 2-0 loss.

Cheshire held a 7-2 lead over Stamford heading into the seventh inning before Stamford stormed back and closed the gap to 7-5.

“It’s been a struggle all year long,” Cheshire coach Bill Robertson told Henry Chisholm of the New Haven Register/GameTimeCT.com after the game. “They’ve been through a lot of stuff on the field, having to win games, so I just looked at them and said, ‘They’re good.’ I was confident.”
