Cheshire Students Among 2,500 National Merit Scholarship Recipients for 2016

The students were selected from among 15,000 finalists.

Cheshire residents Nazar Ahammad Chowdhury and Shangda Xu are among 2,500 students to win the prestigious 2016 National Merit Scholarship.

Chowdhury, who attends Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, plans to study Anesthesiology in college, while Xu, who attends Cheshire High School, plans to study Political Science, according to the academic excellence organization.

Winning students were chosen from a pool of 15,000 finalists, and were judged on their academic records, level of the advanced classes they took, standardized test scores and community involvement.

Applicants were required to write an essay according to the National Merit Scholarship's website. Winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
