Cheshire Superintendent of Schools to Leave for New Position

Dr. Greg Florio is expected to be named the new executive director of CREC on Wednesday.

Cheshire Superintendent of Schools Greg Florio is expected to be named the new executive director of the Capital Region Education Council on Wednesday, according to the Hartford Courant.

The Courant reports that in his new job Florio will oversee 18 interdistrict magnet schools, several special education schools and a wide array of services for 35 school districts in Greater Hartford. CREC serves about 9,000 students and has an operational budget of about $300 million and a staff of about 2,000, according to the Courant.

He will replace Bruce Douglas, who has been executive director since 2001 and is prepared to step down by the end of the year.

Florio told Turmelle that he felt making the move would be a “great step up for me in my career, to go from serving one district to serving an entire region of school systems. At the same time, what made this a most difficult, heart-wrenching decision is having to leave Cheshire. It’s such a great district and has so many great people to work with.”
