Cheshire's Matt Burns Honored by Pawtucket Red Sox

SCSU outfielder formally recognized for selection to all-conference team as part of 'ECAC All-Star Night with the PawSox.'

Cheshire’s Matt Burns of the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team was honored, along with teammate Rocco Cundari, for his selection to the All-ECAC team Monday night by the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium in Rhode Island.

Following a pre-game barbeque down the first base line, the all-stars gathered on the field prior to the first pitch to be recognized. The student-athletes had their accolades and name read aloud by the public announcer, before being greeted at the pitcher’s mound by Commissioner Dr. Kevin McGinniss, a SCSU alum, and PawSox pitcher Matt Barnes.

Barnes, a native of Bethel, Conn., is a former pitcher for ECAC Member, University of Connecticut. Commissioner McGinniss wrapped up the pre-game festivities by throwing out the first ball.

This spring, the conference honored 559 student-athletes from 201 institutions on its spring all-star teams. All 559 all-stars, ranging from all three collegiate divisions, represented an ECAC member institution and were elected first team all-conference in his/her respective league or nominated by his/her institution. The team is then voted upon by the head coaches or selected representatives from each institution from the appropriate division.

Other All-ECAC honorees who could not attend on Monday wereNick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) of the baseball team and Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) of the softball team.
