The Cheshire High School Girls Cross Country team earned their first victories over their opponents on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Wharton Brook State Park in North Haven. The girls team defeated Lauraton Hall & Foran both from Milford and North Haven. The score was CHS 20-Foran 38, CHS 15 -Lauraton Hall- 50, & CHS 15- North Haven 50. At Cross Country meets low score prevails just like golf stated Head Girls Coach Rob Schaefer. Just like last year’s Cross Country season CHS Student-Athlete & Phenom Alexa Ciccone finished the meet first with a time of 19:30. At the 45th Annual New Haven Labor Day Road Race on September 5th Ciccone was the first female athlete to finish the race with a time of 18:36 according to WFSB TV. According to CTInsider.com Ciccone is one of the top 25 Cross Country Female Athletes to watch this season. Other top CHS girls finishers were # 2 Mia VIentos 21:35, #4 Eva Curran 22:41, #5 Ava Ciccone 22:45, #8 Jocelyn Grace 24:01, # 10 Katie Hall 24:33, & # 12 Abby Cortigiano CH 25:17.

Coach Schaefer was pleased with his team’s win over their opponents. Schaefer reached his 300th win milestone with the girls’ victories on September 8th and is now at 302 wins & 39 losse. As to when his next milestone will be, Schaefer commented, “At about 10 dual meets per year, the pace moves slowly. I hope this year's most important milestone is a winning season.” As to whether his team’s 1st win on 9-8-22 is reason to be optimistic, Schaefer was cautious by stating, “One can never predict a season in one meet. Too many variables. Other teams. Injuries. Progress or the lack of progress. Unpredictability is the joy of sport.” But he is still hopeful though for his team. Schaefer said, “These three wins make me hopeful about the season. There is tougher competition down the road, though.” After the meet his team celebrated with cake & a card given to him by his team at Wharton Brook State Park.
