CT Correctional Officer Attacked While Protecting Inmate: Reports

CHESHIRE, CT — A correctional officer at Cheshire Correctional Institution was attacked by an inmate Thursday night while attempting to protect another inmate who was being attacked, according to multiple reports.

The officer's injuries included blows to the face and body, according to a statement from American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 387 President Sean Howard obtained by WTNH.

The attack comes just days after a similar incident at Garner Correctional Institution, from where two officers were rushed to the hospital Tuesday after being stabbed by an inmate with a sharpened toothbrush, according to the state Department of Correction.

"As Commissioner, this is my worst fear - that our brave staff members are attacked and injured," Commissioner Angel Quiros of the Connecticut Department of Correction said in a news release following Tuesday's attack. "This is a sobering reminder of the dangers our courageous correctional professionals face on a daily basis ... I am doubling down on my efforts to ensure the safety of these fine men and women."
