Cheshire 25 Years Ago - Conducting the 1986 Historic Resources Survey of the Town

Dr. Bruce Clouette, one of the two architectural historians who conducted the inventory, will be returning to Cheshire to reflect on his findings in the 1986 report. A quarter of a century ago, Historic Resources Inventory Building and Structures forms were compiled for 82 historically significant properties in Cheshire. Each property inventory included identification (including the historic name) and description of the site, a brief write up of the notable features of the building or site, another write up of the historical or architectural importance, source information, and a small black and white photograph. Only 70 of the original properties are still standing. The most recent structure lost was the Keeler Stove Shop due to storm damage this past winter.  Dr. Clouette holds a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Connecticut and is the historian at Public Archaeology Survey Team (P.A.S.T.) where he also serves as an architectural historian and industrial archaeologist. He has produced hundreds of cultural resource management products and written or contributed to several books on southern New England history, among them Connecticut: An Inventory of Historic Engineering and Industrial Sites, Connecticut's Historic Highway Bridges, Historic Highway Bridges of Rhode Island, Carriages and Clocks, Corsets and Locks: The Rise and Fall of an Industrial City, New Haven 1850-1950, and Where Water Meets Land: Movable Bridges in Connecticut. He has also designed numerous museum exhibits, including the Connecticut state capitol's permanent exhibit on the history of the Connecticut General Assembly.
