Hi. My name is Alex Housemann and I am a 7th Grade student at Dodd Middle School in Cheshire. In the fall of 2010 I was recommended and accepted to participate as a student delegate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program. I will be travelling to the United Kingdom this summer for 19 days. I will visit England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland where I will have the opportunity to learn about medieval history, the literature and lore of the United Kingdom, plant biology and geology, government, Scottish heritage and history, and I’ll even get to search for the Loch Ness monster.
Since January I have been busy preparing for my People to People trip. I can't believe that I will be travelling in less than 2 months. I have met with the other student delegates 3 times now and I am learning and taking tests about the countries I will be visiting. I am very excited to have this opportunity to travel to Europe representing Cheshire, CT and to be learning about other cultures and ways of living.
People to People Ambassadors are carefully interviewed and evaluated before their acceptance into the program, and I am honored to have been selected. I am excited to share my experience with my peers, family, and friends when I return. As an Ambassador I can earn high school and college credit because of the many educational elements in my program. This educational experience will increase my understanding of the world and give me the opportunity to learn firsthand about new places and cultures.
In case you haven’t heard of People to People, President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded People to People in 1956. He believed that if people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would nations. Programs like Sister Cities, Project HOPE, and the Student Ambassador Program were created by People to People, and have become independent programs since then.
I am still busy raising money to help offset the cost of the trip. My tuition is $6,500, which includes meals, transportation, accommodations, and educational activities. I have raised about $1,000 so far.
Thanks to all of you who came to the first Zumba master class fundraiser and to those of you who have been giving me your cans and bottles, I have collected over $300 so far from cans and bottles!!! Our group had a car wash last week to raise money and my mom is going to do another Zumba fundraiser. This time it will be in the WATER! It is happening on Saturday, May 21 at REACT Physical Therapy and Aquatic Center in Waterbury. Registration is 9:00 and the class starts at 9:30. Please contact my mom (robynhousemann@sbcglobal.net) if you can make it. We will have water and snacks and raffle prizes too! If you can’t make it and you would like to donate a raffle prize then that would be great too. Please pass this information to other people who you think would be interested.
Thank you in advance for your gracious consideration and support.
Sincerely yours,
Alex
PS. Mom says that Aqua Zumba is for everyone. You don’t need to know how to swim or dance. You just have to have fun (and she might ask you to sing) and you can work as hard as you want.
