Former Cheshire Resident Wins Big Laughs at Foxwood's Comedy Contest

Pat Oates is the only Connecticut comic to win the contest in the 5 years it has been running.

For the last 7 years a former Cheshire father of two has been making people laugh at clubs all over Connecticut. And now he’s won bragging rights as the winner of the latest Foxwood’s contest.

The contest started with 120 comics from all over New England and the Tri-State area. Oates, who now lives in Ansonia, passed through preliminary finals, on to quarter finals and on to semi finals before making it to the final three.

Oates is the only Connecticut comic to win the contest in the 5 years it’s been running. He won a grand prize of $1,500 and upcoming paid work at Comix Comedy Club “and bragging rights over 119 other comics,” he laughed.

Oates got his start when a friend signed him up for a comedy contest they were watching at a bar in Naugatuck.

“They called my name and my buddy said ’you can do this.’ I went up, made fun of everyone and won the contest. And fell in love with comedy,” he said.

What makes his act different is that he treats his performance more like a conversation rather than a speech.

“Pat Oates is Sad” is his next show which will be a live recording from Comix at Moheghan Sun. It will be recorded live this Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.

“We will be recording in the beautiful lounge. All are welcome to sit in the audience and enjoy beer specials and watch me and Brandon Smith vent about nonsense,” Oates wrote on his Facebook page.
