The Cheshire Walk Like MADD is being held of Greg Schena. Below is a quote from his mother, Maryellen Schena. This is why we walk…..
“On May 12, 2010, the life of a much loved and respected 27 year old young man was ended because someone chose to drive drunk. That loss of our dear son, Greg Schena, left a community devastated: his loving family, innumerable friends, co-teachers and coaches, the hundreds of students he taught and coached, the kids who came back to camp each year because Greg was their counselor, and the other more than 3,000 mourners at his wake who had been touched by this charismatic young man.
Greg was someone who lit up a room when he was present, gave confidence to the insecure kid in the hallway or athlete on the field, encouraged the underdog and stood up to the bully. He was proud of his 4 brothers and sisters and 10 nieces and nephews, devoted to his friends and to those he taught and coached, and was an accomplished football, hockey and baseball athlete. The "Greg Stories" that support these qualities are still being told to us. We knew he loved life and all that it encompassed for him, but the depth of his legacy is amazing.
We realize that we were blessed to have Greg for 27 years, but to know that he could still be enriching the lives of so many and making the world a better place if it were not for that unconscionable choice made by a drunk driver makes the reality of May, 2010, so much more devastating. Drunk driving CAN be stopped through the dedicated efforts of MADD and its tireless staff. The Schena Family thanks them for all their support these past almost 4 years, and we, along with all of you here, who, by your very presence, believe in the MADD message, will now WALK LIKE MADD and spread and live that message daily. Thank you.”
