Obituary: Joy Yocher Deegan, 90, Of Cheshire

She was a nursery school teacher in Hamden, a member of the Cheshire Historical Society and a dedicated poll worker for years.

CHESHIRE, CT — (From Alderson-Ford Funeral Home): Joy Yocher Deegan, 90, wife of the late Joseph C. Deegan, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Mrs. Deegan was born on February 3, 1932, in Waterbury, CT, to the late Frederick and Mary (Hubbell) Yocher. She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire where her service included Assistant Treasurer and membership in various groups.

Joy loved learning and was proud of her education. For many years, she was a nursery school teacher at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Hamden where she shared this love with her students

Joy was also an avid reader and was known to always have a book on hand. This evolved into being a page at the Cheshire Library.

She loved information and was a regular fan of Jeopardy. She also was a member of the Cheshire Historical Society and enjoyed knowing the history of her lifelong town of residence. She was a dedicated poll worker for years and was the recipient of a Public Service Award for this work. She also participated in Girl Scouts both as a scout and then as a leader.

Joy will be remembered by her family for her love for the beach, reading, and camping, her delight in pointing out that she was a leftie, and her barefoot walks on Cape Cod.

She leaves behind her children, Peter Deegan and his wife Tracey and Susan Pappas and her husband Ted; her grandchildren, Andrew (Leah), Megan (John), Trevor, and Tanner (Nathan); along with her great-grandchildren, Xander, Ainsley, Makayla, Matthew, and Ronin. In addition to her parents, Joy was pre-deceased by her brother, William Yocher.

Arrangements – A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Cheshire Hillside Cemetery with the assistance of the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be held on December 30th at 11:00 at the First Congregational Church, Cheshire. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, 111 Church Dr., Cheshire, CT 06410, or to the Cheshire Historical Society, 43 Church Dr., Cheshire, CT 06410.
