Police are reminding residents to take steps to avoid becoming a victim of a "crime of opportunity."

CHESHIRE, CT — Cheshire Police are investigating a recent attempted theft from a motor vehicle in the south end of town. A resident provided video footage of the incident to police.

“The video footage is a good reminder that these individuals who come into town at night are looking for easy targets,” police said in a news release. “The individual is seen trying a car door handle, finding it locked and then moving on.”

Police said the thefts from motor vehicles continue to be a “crime of opportunity” with the perpetrators looking for motor vehicles with unsecure doors, windows left down, valuables left in sight and keys in the vehicle.
