Police Officer Of The Year Announced In Cheshire

CHESHIRE, CT — Officer Mahmoud Kafel has been named the Cheshire Police Department’s Gary M. Walberg Police Officer of the Year.

Kafel was hired by the Cheshire Police Department in 2021 and currently serves as a field training officer.

“Since joining the department, he has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a daily commitment to serving the community and supporting departmental operations,” according to the Cheshire Police Department. “Officer Kafel reports to duty with a positive attitude, remains receptive to learning, and maintains a high level of productivity. He takes initiative in fulfilling his responsibilities and is dedicated to continually improving his skills and effectiveness as a police officer. He welcomes feedback and constructive criticism from supervisors and uses it as an opportunity for professional growth.”

Throughout his tenure, Officer Kafel has completed numerous advanced training courses and earned certifications in Crisis Intervention, ARIDE, Interview and Interrogation, SWAT School, and Sniper School. These specialized trainings enhance his ability to manage complex and high-risk situations, identify impairment, communicate effectively, and operate safely in dynamic environments. He consistently applies this knowledge in the field, strengthening both his individual performance and the department’s operational readiness.

Currently serving as a Field Training Officer, Officer Kafel plays a key role in mentoring and developing new officers. He provides clear instruction, reinforces department policies and procedures, and shares insights gained from his training and experience. His leadership supports officer development and helps ensure that new personnel are prepared to perform their duties safely, confidently, and professionally.

Officer Kafel’s consistent performance, dedication to training, openness to feedback, and commitment to developing fellow officers set a standard for others to follow. We are proud to recognize him as Officer of the Year.
