1 Killed After Car Ends Up In The Water, ID Released: Reports

Folks attending a nearby wedding made a heroic effort to try and save the man, according to reports.

OLD SAYBROOK, CT — A man was killed after his vehicle went into the water Saturday night, according to media reports.

Steven Mark Wahle, 76, of Old Saybrook, was killed when his car went into the water behind the Saybrook Point Inn Resort and Marina on Bridge Street, according to Fox 61. The 911 call was placed at 10:21 p.m., according to WFSB 3 TV.

Several people rushed to Wahle's aid and were able to remove him from the vehicle and performed CPR on him, Fox 61 reported. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

At the time of the accident, there was a wedding and several people there were part of the rescue efforts, Fox 61 reported. No one else was inside the vehicle at the time of the accident, WFSB 3 TV reported.

Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael A. Spera told the Hartford Courant that he "commend(s) the brave efforts of the citizen responders who risked their own lives, in (an) attempt to save the life of a complete stranger.” The accident remains under investigation.
