Vehicle Hits Deer In Westbrook, Prompting Advice From Fire Officials

WESTBROOK, CT — A car struck a deer in Westbrook early Thursday morning, according to fire officials.

The driver was not seriously injured and was able to exit the vehicle. The vehicle's airbags deployed after a delay, but did not lead to any injuries.

"This incident serves as an important reminder that deer activity remains high throughout New England, especially during the spring and early summer months," the Westbrook Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post. "As does raise their fawns and deer populations become more active near roadways, motorists should remain alert, particularly during dawn and dusk hours when deer are most likely to be on the move."

To prevent crashes with deer, fire officials gave the following tips:

• Slow down in areas marked with deer crossing signs.
• Scan both sides of the road, especially near wooded areas.
• Use high beams when safe to do so at night.
• If you see one deer, expect others nearby.
• Brake firmly if a collision is unavoidable, but avoid swerving into oncoming traffic or off the roadway.
