CLINTON, CT — After weeks of relief at the pump, gasoline prices are climbing sharply again in Clinton and across Connecticut, driven by a fresh escalation in the conflict between the United States and Iran that has rattled global oil markets, according to the latest data from AAA and the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Connecticut's statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded reached $4.204 as of July 25, according to AAA. That marks a substantial increase from $3.937 on July 10 and is the highest the state average has been since late spring. As of July 20, AAA had placed the Connecticut average at $4.10 — up 16 cents from $3.94 one week earlier and 2 cents above the month-ago average of $4.08. Compared to a year ago, when the state average was $3.12, Connecticut drivers are now paying about $1.08 more per gallon. The jump follows the July 8 breakdown of a ceasefire agreement, which renewed military hostilities between the United States and Iran and sent crude oil prices climbing more than $11 in a single week, according to AAA Northeast.
The state's current average of $4.204 exceeds the national average of $4.111 tracked by AAA as of July 25. The EIA, which publishes weekly retail fuel price data, put the national average for regular gasoline at $4.001 per gallon for the week ending July 20 — up from $3.855 the week prior and up 88 cents from a year ago. The EIA placed the New England regional average, which includes Connecticut, at $4.011 per gallon for the week ending July 20, up from $3.851 the prior week.
Clinton falls within the New Haven-Meriden metropolitan area as tracked by AAA. That metro's average has closely mirrored the statewide figure in recent weeks and is currently tracking near the state average of $4.204. The New Haven-Meriden area's prices, like those statewide, have risen sharply over the past two weeks in step with the national surge. The New England regional average of $4.011 reported by the EIA for the week ending July 20 was about 9 cents below the national AAA average of $4.111, reflecting some variation in how the two agencies measure and survey retail prices.
