Foodie In Florence: Sustainability on the Shoreline

How sustainable is Clinton and is anyone supporting sustainability in our upcoming elections? Read up on my plan for creating a sustainable Clinton!

With elections happening in the near future I think it's timely to discuss sustainability in our local community. How sustainable is Clinton, and are any candidate supporting its ideals? I'm not so sure myself. I do understand that candidates are actively trying to keep business in town to boost our economy and make us profitable etc. But what else? If I were running here's what I'd promote:

First I'd develop a sustainability branch or office of sustainability in town. This branch would be responsible for coordinating more farmers markets, local food expos, and cater food related events in town in association with local groups like the library or historical society. Through this office I would implement a sustainable education program. I'd develop a veggie garden in our school systems and community garden plot to teach adults and children how to grow their own food and find a deeper connection to nature.

The office would be the ultimate resource center. Residents could gain information on how to make their house greener, read about subsidies that help pay for using renewable energy, or have access to take-home pamphlets on starting your own garden in the back yard. This branch could help our community come together in this active food movement and would be able to recognize our small local businesses and associations in town. We could really make Clinton come together!

I'd like to challenge any of our candidates running to try and implement one of these ideas! This would make Clinton a leader in sustainability on the Shoreline and supporter of our local economy.

I would really love some feedback on this post Patch Readers! Do we think it's possible to instill these acts of sustainability?
