Spring "Green" Gardening Project

Create a fun project with your children by using green gardening practices.

I love to incorporate recycling principles and "Green" practices for gardening at home.  I try to make my children understand the importance of using something again, and to respect the world we live in. I found this idea in one of my gardening books called "Grow Great Grub" by Gayla Trail.

The author uses recycled toilet paper rolls as seed starters for plants.  My youngest daughter and I decided to use our "Evening Sun" Sunflower seeds for this project.  We didn't have enough empty toilet paper rolls, but we did use two empty paper towel rolls and cut them in four pieces.

1.) Stand up a select number of cardboard rolls on a plate or tray and arrange them into a circular grouping. (We used 8 rolls based on the 2 large rolls we cut)

2.) Gently pack each tube with seed pre-moistened seed starter mix, tapping lightly till it gets near the top.

3.) Plant a single seed in each tube at the right depth for that particular seed and water lightly.

4.) Tie a piece of recycled ribbon, twine or yarn around the group of tubes to hold them in place.

5.) Once your seedling is ready to plant outside you can gently pull off the outer layer of the cardboard tube. Leave a thin layer for planting each tube in its own hole in your garden.

This gardening idea appeared in Gayla Trail's, "Grow Great Grub," Clarkson/Potter Publishers, New York, p.27.
