Business Profile: Beach Donut Shop

Patch Had An Absolutely Delicious Time Interviewing Owner Ted Powaleny

The phrase “to die for” is probably overused and definitely an over exaggeration.  After all, who would die for a pizza, a slice of cheesecake, or something so simple as a donut? That’s absurd (although any one of these eaten in excess won’t exactly prolong your life).

But I’ll never forget when a friend first told me about Beach Donut Shop; she said their lemon sticks were … to die for.  Having lived in the area for 15 years at that point, I have no idea how many times I had driven by the simple brick building where heavenly delights are born.  How much different could they be from those at the beloved DD?

While all of the doughnuts at Beach Donut are divine, my particular favorite is the lemon stick.  Hmm, then again maybe it’s glazed or maybe Boston crème.  It’s a really tough choice and needs further testing.

If something works, keep at it, and that’s the case here. The donuts are handcrafted with the same recipes for over 60 years. Just being in business that long is a true testament that they’ve got some killer products.

The ambiance may not wow you, but when you enter, the smell of the place will. Racks and racks of just-made crowd the shop which is as plain on the inside as on the outside. Breathe in, take a bite, breathe out, take a bite, breath in again.  You may never return to the mass-produced commercial competitor.

All those years and I didn’t even know Beach Donut was there. I think I’ll have to start making up for lost time.
