Cedar Island Marina in Clinton Celebrates 40th Anniversary
The marina has been in business since 1974.

The Cedar Island Marina will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Thursday, Aug 28.
The family-owned business, run by Jeffrey Shapiro and his son Kristopher Shapiro, is one of the five largest marinas in the state.
The marine industry has been severely impacted by the economy, storms, regulation changes and increased fuel prices. The Essex Island Marina in Essex, Conn., was recently auctioned off owing to the changes in the industry.

Despite these hardships, the Cedar Island Marina sees thousands of patrons return each year.
In the past, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cited the marina as being one of the 25 most environmentally conscious marinas in the country.

The marina’s private marine research lab conducts scientific research and facilitates environmental educational programs. In 1999, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection awarded the marina the Green Circle Award for promoting environmental awareness through its lab.
