Celebrating America’s 250th, Cappella Cantorum Spring Concert is Tribute to American Composers
Among composers' works to be performed: an Underground Railroad code song, the first American spiritual known to be recorded in sheet music.

CLINTON, CT—The Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus and Cappella Orchestra will perform Schubert’s Mass in G Major followed by a special program of music featuring American composers, American music genres, and early musical tributes to our young nation.
The April 26 concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the beautiful and historic Andrews Memorial Auditorium at Clinton Town Hall, 54 East Main St., Clinton.

Featured American composers and American music styles include a Czech composer who wrote in the spirit of American folk songs, a seminary student who added new lyrics to a British anthem to create an American standard, a modern American composer who brought a Scottish hymn to life as a choral favorite, a code song for the Underground Railroad that became the first American spiritual known to be recorded in sheet music, a Gospel sorrow song about suffering and hope made famous by Mahalia Jackson, a modern composer’s setting of a famous poem by James Agee, and a traditional hymn from the early 1900s that became a favorite of jazz bands around the nation.
The Masterworks Chorus and Cappella Orchestra will be conducted by Music Director Dr. Irina Georgieva. Soloists include Megan Weikleenget (soprano), Charles Feierabend (tenor), and John Ong (bass). The Spring Concert is funded in part by grants from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, Essex Bank, and the State of Connecticut/Office of the Arts.

About Cappella Cantorum
Established in 1970, Cappella Cantorum is a non-auditioned community choral group that provides singers of all ages the opportunity to learn, perform, and share great choral music. In addition to twice-yearly concerts and an annual Handel’s Messiah Sing or Listen, the group promotes music education and appreciation through its SummerSings program, International Tour Chorus, vocal training workshops, and other events open to the public. Originally founded to serve the Lower Connecticut River Valley and Shoreline area, Cappella Cantorum now has members from more than 31 communities across the state. Cappella Cantorum is 501(c)(3) non- profit organization.
