Cherished Restaurant To Close After 3 Decades In Old Saybrook

OLD SAYBROOK, CT — Sal's Pizza & Pasta Restaurant will close this month after 32 years in business.

The restaurant originally opened in Westbrook in 1994. In 2007, Sal's moved to 29 Spencer Plain Road in Old Saybrook.

Owner Michael Fava said that the property will be sold at the end of the month. He said the new owners are planning "some kind of food service operation" but that he did not have details.

Fava said it was a "tough decision" to close the restaurant, but he said those involved in running it are "getting older," including his father, Sal, who is 91.

"It's getting challenging to deal with the demands of the business," he said.

A sign on the door of the Sal's Pizza reads: "After 32 wonderful years, the time has come for Sal's Pizza to close our doors.

"We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of our loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years. Your friendship, kindness, and continued patronage have meant more to us than words can express. It has truly been an honor to serve this community and to be part of so many family dinners, celebrations, and special memories.

"While it is difficult to say goodbye, we will always be grateful for the love and support you have shown us over the past 32 years. We will cherish the memories and the relationships we've built along the way.

"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. For making Sal's Pizza a part of your lives. We wish you and your families all the very best."

The sign lists the closing date as Aug. 23.

Sal's serves specialty pizzas, signature pasta dishes and Italian desserts along with a selection of wine, beer, coffee and other drinks.
