The cleaning of Clinton's two bronze statues is complete. A special coating and a coat of wax remains to be completed. Three days of nice weather is needed for this final process. Until that time the statues will remain covered to protect from the elements and birds...if you know what I mean. If all goes well, Giving the Boys a Bath should be done by Mid June. All that remains is paying the bills. The total original estimated cost was $28,000 for all three statues. The final cost is $12,500. Thank you to Francis Miller of ConservArt and our Public Works Department for some serious cost cutting measures and alternatives which saved some major cash while getting the same desired result. To date $3000 has been raised. The final cost comes out to roughly $1 per resident. This project will preserve these historic works of art for at least another 25 years. That amounts to 166 dollars per year for each statue's maintenance. If not touched for another 50 years, it amounts to $83 per year, per statue. No matter how you look at it, it is an incredible bargain for something that will long surpass any of our lifetimes. These statues were gifts to our town from private citizens. We were entrusted to maintain them for future generations. Please be a part of history and donate a buck or two to "Give the Boys a Bath", care of Liberty bank, 8 Main Street, Clinton, CT 06413. 14,000 residents making a small effort can accomplish and continue historic local events! Thank you to all who have supported us so far! Happy Summer!
