Historic Home Damaged In Fire On Christmas Eve In Old Saybrook

OLD SAYBROOK, CT — A historic home in Old Saybrook was damaged in a fire on Christmas Eve, according to fire officials. The home is located in the Fenwick section of Old Saybrook, which is where Hollywood icon Katharine Hepburn lived for many years.

At about 10:20 p.m. on Dec. 24, Old Saybrook firefighters responded to Pettipaug Avenue in the Borough of Fenwick section of Old Saybrook for a fire alarm and a phoned in report of smoke. Arriving firefighters located a fire in the walls adjacent to the chimney from the first through third floors, according to fire officials. The home was built in 1900 and is 5,413 square feet.

No injuries were reported. Six occupants, including three dogs, were displaced as a result of the damage in the home, the fire department said in a post on Facebook. The residents were relocated and stayed with family, according to fire officials.

Old Saybrok Fire responded with 34 firefighters, Old Saybrook Ambulance provided two ambulances, Middlesex Hospital Paramedics were on scene and Clinton Fire responded with their Rapid Intervention Team for Firefighter Safety and Rescue, according to the Old Saybrook Fire Department. The Westbrook Fire Department covered the Old Saybrook Fire Headquarters on Main Street with an Engine.
