Susanne married her beloved husband Robert in 1965, and continued teaching second grade at the Essex Elementary School until starting a family in 1966. She spent many years as a homemaker and full-time mom until the tragic loss of her husband in 1978. She spent some years working as a substitute teacher, then at the Lee Company, retiring from there in 2006.

Susanne was active in Girl Scouts, as both a scout and a troop leader for more than 35 years. She had been a Mariner Girl Scout and a member of the Boston Yacht Club and relished any opportunity to be out on the water on a boat. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Clinton, and had been a member of the choir. She was lucky to have the chance to take many trips and cruises with friends and to make many visits to her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren in Oregon before her health made travel difficult. She enjoyed singing and music, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and good books, and the company of her daughter and her cats.
