Stop & Shop Sets Closure Date For Clinton Store

National retailers have expressed interest in the grocery store's space, according to a company official.

CLINTON, CT — Stop & Shop will close its doors for good in Clinton on Oct. 29, according to a company official.

The store is located at 215 E. Main St. and has a footprint of 60,694 square feet.

"Last year, Stop & Shop announced the difficult decision not to renew the lease for our store located at 215 East Main Street in Clinton, CT as the store was not meeting financial expectations," Stop & Shop said in a statement. "Stop & Shop intends to operate the store through October 29th . All associates will be given the opportunity to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations."

The space, which the grocer occupied for decades, has been generating interest from some national retailers, though nothing has been finalized, The Connecticut Scoop reported.

The shopping plaza will add a new retailer when Steward Ace Hardware moves into the former TJ Maxx space this fall.

There are other Stop & Shops nearby in Madison and Old Saybrook. When the Clinton store closes, there will be 80 Stop & Shops in Connecticut.

Aldi is moving into a space across the street from Stop & Shop. The discount grocer will be next to Walgreens at 224 to 230 E. Main St. in Clinton.
