Volunteer, 78, Dies While Making Deliveries For Meals On Wheels In Tragic Accident: Clinton Police

The woman was tragically killed when she was run over by her own truck after making a food delivery, according to police.

CLINTON, CT — A 78-year-old volunteer for Meals on Wheels was killed when she was run over by her own truck after making a food delivery in Clinton on Tuesday morning, according to police. The victim has been identified as Carol Moriarty of Cutler Lane in Old Lyme.

Emergency crews responded to Alden Drive in Clinton at about 11:05 a.m. on the report of a person sustaining head injuries after being struck by a vehicle, according to Sgt. Jeremiah Dunn.

Dunn said medical aid was rendered by first-responders on the scene and the victim died while en route to the hospital.

Investigation revealed that the victim’s 2015 Dodge pickup truck was parked on an incline in the driveway and the victim exited and made a delivery to the residence, according to Dunn.

“When the victim returned to get into the truck at some point it began to roll backwards,” Dunn said in a news release. “The driver tried to stop the roll and was knocked down and fell under the truck. The driver was run over by the wheel of the truck. The driver suffered head injuries. There was no one else in the truck and no other vehicles involved. Witnesses at the scene did not observe the event directly, but immediately afterward and called 911.”

Moriarty was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels – Estuary Council of Seniors based in Clinton and Old Saybrook. She was delivering meals at the time of the accident.

Dunn said the case remains under investigation and OSHA is also investigating.
