Investigators later determined the stabbing had occurred in New Milford.

Police identified the suspect as Jefferson Barbosa-Ribeiro, 36, of Danbury. He is charged with multiple felonies, including criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree assault and first-degree kidnapping, police said.

According to an arrest report, Barbosa-Ribeiro told police the two had gone to New Milford together before an argument escalated inside a vehicle. He told investigators he became upset after seeing a name on the victim’s phone, police said.

Ribeiro told police he stabbed the woman in the back and stomach and prevented her from leaving the vehicle when she tried to escape, according to the News-Times.

He also told investigators he later drove for more than 40 minutes before deciding to seek help, the outlet reported.

The victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police initially said the man was held on a $750,000 bond and scheduled to appear in court April 17.

He was later arraigned in Torrington Superior Court, where a judge set his bail at $1 million and scheduled his next court date for May 19, according to the News-Times.
