ICE Arrests Man During Danbury Operation That Left 1-Year-Old Alone In Vehicle

DANBURY, CT — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said agents arrested an Ecuadoran national in Danbury on June 10 after he allegedly fled from officers and left his 1-year-old child inside a vehicle.

According to ICE, Marcos Cevallos-Guzman failed to comply with officers’ commands, resisted arrest and fled on foot during a targeted enforcement operation in the city.

“Once apprehended, ICE officers allowed him to contact the child’s mother to arrange transportation for his child,” an ICE spokesperson said in a statement. “Officers remained with the child to ensure his safety until the child’s mother arrived.”

ICE said Cevallos-Guzman remains in custody pending removal proceedings.

The agency said Cevallos-Guzman’s criminal history includes arrests for assault and disorderly conduct.

The incident came to public attention after Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves released a statement criticizing what he described as a lack of communication between federal immigration authorities and local officials regarding enforcement operations conducted in the city.

According to Alves, ICE agents contacted the Danbury Police Department after the child was left unattended in the vehicle.

Alves said Danbury police responded and found the child being attended to and provided with water.

“As has consistently been the case, neither the City of Danbury nor the Danbury Police Department is notified of or informed about federal immigration enforcement operations conducted within our community,” Alves said.

The mayor also criticized what he described as a lack of information provided to municipal officials regarding federal immigration enforcement actions.

“ICE continues to provide no information to municipal officials regarding its operations, including who is being targeted or the circumstances surrounding enforcement actions taking place,” Alves said. “This lack of communication leaves local officials and community members without answers and contributes to uncertainty and concern.”
