DANBURY, CT — Danbury residents will have an opportunity to weigh in on a series of proposed charter revisions that could significantly reshape how city government operates.
The Danbury Charter Revision Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25, in the City Council Chambers at City Hall to gather public feedback on a draft proposal that would make changes to election cycles, term lengths and other aspects of municipal government.
One of the most notable changes would extend the terms of the mayor and City Council members from two to four years. Under the draft, general city elections would be held every four years beginning in 2027, rather than every odd-numbered year.
The proposal would also extend the terms of several other elected offices, including the city treasurer, town clerk, constables and members of the Zoning Commission from two to four years.
The draft includes changes to the Board of Education election structure as well. Under the proposal, the city would eventually transition to a system in which all 11 school board members are elected during the same election cycle rather than through the current staggered process.
Another proposed revision would change how vacancies in elected offices are filled. If the City Council is unable to appoint a replacement within 60 days, the mayor would be authorized to fill the vacancy within the following 30 days.
The draft also proposes revisions to the city's reapportionment process, including changes to how ward boundaries are reviewed following the federal census and allowing the City Council to hire outside experts to assist with redistricting if necessary.
The charter serves as the governing framework for the city and outlines the structure, powers and responsibilities of municipal government.
Residents wishing to comment on the proposed revisions can do so during Thursday's public hearing. The draft proposal has been made available by the city in advance of the meeting.
